Contaminated land: the drilling and fieldwork

Brownfield and former industrial sites often carry contamination in the soil, soil gas or groundwater, and dealing with it follows a logical path - investigate, monitor, treat, then decommission. Geotron is the specialist drilling and fieldwork contractor that remediation contractors and environmental consultants call on to deliver the intrusive works at each stage. We do not design the remediation or act as the principal remediation contractor - we put the rigs, crews and installations on the ground to your scope and programme.

1. Investigation drilling

We recover soil, gas and groundwater samples using the method that suits the site - window sampling for shallow work and restricted access, cable percussion for deeper soils, rotary where needed - and take the precautions contaminated ground demands. Our crews are experienced on potentially contaminated sites and control cross-contamination between locations, which protects the integrity of the samples your assessment relies on.

2. Monitoring wells

Contamination is usually assessed over time, not in a single visit. We install boreholes fitted with soil gas and groundwater monitoring wells - single, dual or multi-level (for example Solinst CMT) - so your monitoring programme can establish what is present, at what concentration and whether it is moving.

3. Remediation drilling

Once you have set the remediation strategy, we carry out the drilling and installation it calls for: injection wells, abstraction wells and vapour extraction wells, and the in-well injection of the remediation product you specify, using packers. We deliver the fieldwork - the design, products and oversight stay with you.

4. Decommissioning

When monitoring or treatment is complete, redundant wells are developed, repaired or decommissioned as required, leaving the ground properly sealed.
