Water Supply Boreholes

Your own private water supply

We guide you through the whole process - from working out whether there's a supply beneath your property to drilling and installing the borehole.

We're here to help

Guided from start to finish

We understand that looking into the options for your own private water borehole can be daunting. Geotron UK are here to guide you through the process.

After an initial site visit to determine a suitable location, we work with a qualified hydrogeologist to obtain a borehole prognosis report. This gives a recommended borehole design based on the expected geology beneath your property, the likely depth to groundwater and the potential supply rate available to you.

Depending on your requirements - industrial, agricultural or domestic - our engineers provide a cost proposal covering the drilling and installation. We can also complete associated groundworks and work with specialists to supply and install the pump, water filtration and treatment equipment needed to complete your system.

How do I start with the process?

It starts with an initial site visit to work out the best location. We then work with a qualified hydrogeologist to obtain a borehole prognosis - a recommended design based on the expected geology, the likely depth to groundwater and the potential supply rate beneath your property. From there we provide a clear cost proposal for the drilling and installation.

Who can drill the borehole for me?

We can. Geotron drill and install private water supply boreholes for domestic, agricultural and industrial properties across the UK. We can also complete the associated groundworks and work with specialists to supply and install the pump, filtration and treatment needed to finish your system.

How long will it take?

Generally around 5-8 weeks from your first enquiry, provided specifications are agreed fairly quickly. The recommended hydrogeologist's survey takes 3-4 weeks, then a week or two to finalise everything, followed by a couple of weeks for the actual drilling and installation.

Do I have enough space?

Most properties do. Our rigs are mobile and compact enough to reach a wide range of sites, and at the initial site visit we'll confirm access and identify the best position for the borehole.

Will there be supply below my property?

In most areas there is. We don't use water divining or dowsing - instead we rely on a British Geological Survey (BGS) prognosis, which we believe is a far more accurate and reliable indicator of the geology and likely yield beneath your property. No reputable driller can guarantee a supply, but a BGS survey greatly increases the chances and is rarely wrong.

What pump and treatment system will I need?

That depends on your borehole's yield and depth and how you intend to use the water. Once the borehole is drilled we work with specialists to specify and install the right pump, water filtration and treatment equipment to complete your system.

Will I need an abstraction licence?

For most domestic users in England and Wales, no - you can abstract up to 20m³ (4,400 gallons) per day with no licence or cost. To abstract more than this, or for some commercial uses, an abstraction licence is required from the Environment Agency (or the relevant authority in your area). We'll liaise with the relevant authorities on your behalf, including notifying the BGS of the new borehole and providing them with the logs.

How much will it cost?

Costs vary, largely depending on the specification you choose, the depth required and the geology - with items such as pumps and filtration on top. We provide a clear cost proposal after the site visit and survey so you know exactly what's involved.
