Our services
Site Investigation and Remediation Drilling Services
A wide range of site investigation services, plus bespoke solutions to our clients' project-specific requirements, delivered by specialist crews and equipment.
Pre-drilling services
Preparing the investigation location
Prior to drilling our teams can prepare an investigation location by the following techniques:
- Service pit excavation by hand tools (hand digging)
- Service pit excavation by vacuum excavation
- Concrete breaking
- Concrete coring (diamond coring)
- Concrete sawing and cutting
To maximise efficiency we can supply separate teams to carry out this work ahead of the drilling crew where required.
Borehole drilling, in-situ testing & well installation
A wide range of drilling techniques
Geotron offer a wide range of borehole drilling services from hand held portable techniques through to percussive and hydraulic drilling rigs. Boreholes drilled can be backfilled on completion or installed with soil gas and groundwater monitoring wells (single, dual or multi-level wells e.g. Solinst CMT) or wells designed for remediation of contaminated soils and/or groundwater (remediation product injection wells, groundwater abstraction wells, vapour extraction wells etc.)
Main drilling techniques
- Hand augering and cased hand drilling
- Hand-held percussive window sampling
- Soil vapour probing and vapour pin installation
- Window and Windowless sampling (drop hammer rig)
- Dynamic sampling (rotary/percussive rig)
- Hollow stem auger (8" & 10") (with and without dynamic sampling)
- Open hole rotary drilling (water, air or air-mist flush)
- Rotary coring (conventional & wireline; water, air or air-mist flush)
- Cable percussion drilling (shell & auger; 6" to 12" casing & tooling)
In-situ geotechnical testing & sampling
- Standard Penetration Tests (SPT/CPT)
- Thick-walled U100 undisturbed samples
- Thin-walled UT100 undisturbed samples
- Bulk & Disturbed samples

Services FAQs
Methods, testing and environmental work - what consultants ask us most.
Should we use window sampling, cable percussion or rotary?
The three methods suit different jobs, and we run all of them in-house, so we specify the method to the ground rather than to the rig we happen to own. Windowless sampling is quick and low-disturbance for shallow geotechnical and environmental holes and gets tracked rigs into restricted sites - typically windowless sampling to a standard 5-6m, or up to around 10m in suitable ground conditions, and dynamic probing to around 20m. Cable percussion (shell and auger) is the workhorse for deeper holes in soils, hard clays, silts and sands, with 150mm to 300mm casing and tooling for SPTs, U100 sampling and monitoring or remediation well installation. Dynamic sampling and rotary drilling are for sampling soils and coring or open holing through solid geology to reach the required depth. Tell us the ground model and objectives and we will advise.
Can you work on brownfield and contaminated sites?
Yes - it is central to what Geotron does. Working clean areas before dirty ones, we clean down tools between positions so contamination is not carried from hole to hole, and recover the soil, soil-gas and groundwater samples the assessment calls for. Our rigs and crews are equipped for hazardous and volatile ground, including being fitted with spark arrestors and chalwyn valves. We are also experienced with installing aquifer protection seals, through temporary casing reduction or the installation of sacrificial casing strings.
Do you install monitoring wells and carry out remediation?
Yes. We install, develop, repair and decommission monitoring and abstraction wells, and we carry out remediation directly - including direct injection of remediation product into the ground. That means one contractor can take a contaminated site from investigation through to active remediation.
How do you make sure a borehole position is clear of services?
Nothing is drilled until the position is cleared. Our pre-drilling preparation scans and marks each location, and where a spot needs proving we excavate either using insulated hand tools or via vacuum excavation techniques to confirm service avoidance. It is a standard part of every job.
Can you provide the utility or topographical survey too?
Yes. We can provide PAS 128 utility clearance surveys and topographical (XYZ) GPS surveys alongside the drilling, so the survey and the intrusive works are coordinated under a single point of contact.
Do you provide vacuum excavation?
Yes - we have vacuum excavators in our own fleet. They remove soil with suction rather than a mechanical bucket, so we can expose buried services, dig inspection pits and prove borehole positions safely, with no drilling tool going near live apparatus.
